What is manipulation?

Manipulation is when a specific thrust of small amplitude is applied to the stiff or restricted joint. Patient's will usually feel or hear a click or a pop. This is normal.
It has the effect of restoring full range of motion to the joint by activating mechanoreceptors (sensory receptors) within the joint capsule. It has the effect of altering the neuromuscular firing within muscles to cause a reflex relaxation of the tight musculature.
Simply, it helps to restore normal pain free motion. It is not used on every patient and only used when deemed appropriate.

Do I need a Doctor’s referral?

You do not need a doctor's referral to see a chiropractor. Chiropractors are primary contact practitioners that specialise in the diagnosis, treatment and management of musculoskeletal conditions that are due to mechanical dysfunction of the joints and muscles of the neck, back and limbs.

Naturally, a severe injury needs emergency care from A&E or attention from your GP.

However, visiting your chiropractor can sometimes be the best choice. Which you choose may be a matter of personal preference, since both are able to diagnose your injury and organise treatment. Traditionally, a doctor would be the first port of call, but all too often a GP will refer a patient with musculoskeletal injury to a physical therapist such as a chiropractor, osteopath or physiotherapist for treatment.

How is Chiropractic different from Physiotherapy and Osteopathy?

Modern day chiropractic, osteopathy and physiotherapy share much common ground. Today there are probably more similarities than differences in terms of concepts and techniques used. The most important thing is you find someone who you have confidence in, and with whom you feel comfortable with.

What training does a chiropractor have?

Chiropractors are highly trained primary contact health care professionals. A five-year, full-time university masters degree is required at an internationally recognised institution. The studies include anatomy, neurology, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, nutrition, pharmacology, radiography, diagnosis and manipulation skills to mention but a few.
The term 'chiropractor' is protected by law and chiropractors are regulated by statute. The General Chiropractic Council (GCC) is the UK-wide statutory body established by Parliament to regulate the chiropractic profession.

How many treatments will I need?

Usually an initial course of 3-5 treatments is recommended, depending on the condition being treated. In general, acute conditions of recent onset may only require 2 or 3 treatments. Chronic conditions usually require more treatments to achieve sustained results.
Treatments may be scheduled two or three times during the first week to obtain optimal response and then tapering as the condition improves.
